Criteria for VYCR Selections
The VYCR should engage a diverse group of readers.
The VYCR should be notable for its literary or academic merit.
The VYCR should call to mind Virginia Yerxa’s generous spirit, love of community, and sense of adventure.
The vision of the Virginia Read is to support both reading and community, connecting a diverse group of readers through a selected book in common. In this shared experience it is hoped that areas of common interest and our connection to this community are discovered or renewed.
VYCR Inspiration
The Virginia Yerxa Community Read was started in 2009 by veteran teacher Roberta James, who was inspired by Virginia Wilson Yerxa, a beloved and vital member of the community for over 60 years. One of Virginia’s countless contributions was her service as a Colusa Unified School Board member, during which time she became a known advocate for reading.
Many individuals work in a variety of ways to bring the Virginia Read to our community each year. Central to the efforts are family and friends of Virginia Wilson Yerxa, Friends of the Library, and other civic organizations. In addition to these participants is our readership, whose involvement enriches our community, promotes the enjoyment of reading, and supports the VYCR vision.
